[texts]Ett vikingatida (?) ankare fran Hamngatan i Sigtuna - Rune Edberg
In 1961, an iron anchor was found in Sigtuna's occupational layers. Stratigraphically, it can be dated to some time before about AD 1200. It may thus be Viking Age or even older. Typological dating seems impossible due to the scarcity of finds of early anchors in northern Europe. Swedish text, English summary.

[texts]Sigtunaleden - och mysteriet med de saknade vikingaskeppen - Rune Edberg
Some views on Central Sweden's Viking Period ships and shipping is reconsidered. Although smaller craft like those well-known from many burials, certainly was used on inland waters, Baltic sailing surely demanded ships of some size. Also Swedish participation with men-of-war in the Danish raids on England is well attested and lack of finds should not be misinterpreted. Also, the supply of food and firewood to urban populations like Birka's and Sigtuna's must have created lots of shipping and mad...

[texts]Experimental "Viking voyages" on Eastern European rivers 1983-2006 - Rune Edberg
Several experimental boat voyages on rivers in Eastern Europe and the ex-USSR have taken place during the last decades. All have confirmed that travelling on rivers, against strong current or in shallow waters, is a challenging and sometimes quite impossible task. The notion that Scandinavians brought their own vessels to and across Russia, as sometimes suggested by imaginative scholars, is neither supported by archeological and historical research, nor by these experiments.

[texts]From the Varangians to the Greeks. The Experimental Voyage with the Aifur - Rune Edberg
In 1994 and 1996, a small Viking ship replica, the 'Aifur' sailed frpm Sweden to the Black Sea, using rivers and portages. It was a piece of experimental archaeology. The part from Lake Ilmen upstream (the river Lovat) was not navigable very far because of the low water level. It is questioned if this part of the famous road "From the Varangians to the Greeks" ever was navigable, especially as water level in the Viking Age was lower than today...

[texts]Folk och rovare i Sigtuna stad. Danagaldernas roll vid samhallsomvandlingen omkring ar 1000 - Rune Edberg
From the 990s to the 1020s AD, vast amounts of silver reached Scandinavia as war booty from the danegelds extorted during the raids on England. When this began reaching Sweden, King Olof Skotkonung set up his own mintage in Sigtuna. Upon supplying English silver to the mint, the Swedish raiders received Olof's minted pieces minus his toll. As a token, the king also assigned town plots to the leaders, main contributors and other loyal followers...

[texts]Marinarkeologi under jorden. Aspekter pa sjofart, batbygge och hamnforhallanden i Sigtuna under vikingatid och tidig medeltid - Rune Edberg
Traces of shipping have been preserved by post-glacial land uplift in the occupation layers of early Sigtuna. Different approaches to this evidence have been undertaken, drawing on the vast quantity of finds stored in Sigtuna Museum√Ęs depot. The large number of clench bolts is interpreted as waste from the dismantling and repair of boats. These finds, and also wooden finds, both derive mostly from small and medium-sized vessels, probably used for personal transport and for supplying the town wi...

[texts]Dnjeprs forsvunna forsar fangslar vikingaforskare - Rune Edberg
According to several Viking Period sources, people of Scandinavian origin travelled from Kiev down the River Dnepr to Contantinople. As the famous Dnepr rapids nowadays are covered by hydropower dams, modern experimental boat archaeologists can regrettably not genuinely experience this challenging part of the route.
